Burlington and Oakville are on the shores of Lake Ontario and a great base for day trips in the region. Some popular day trips for a complete day of fun and adventure include:
Botanical Gardens: The Royal Botanical Gardens offers the longest walking path in Canada called the Bruce Trail. Go for a hike or just discover these beautiful grounds and gardens. The Outdoor Garden Areas are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., late April to Thanksgiving and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thanksgiving to spring opening with the exception of the Rock Garden that is closed from Thanksgiving until spring opening.
There are several gardens that make up the region including the Laking Garden (south of Plains Road W near Botanical Drive), Hendrie Park and Sanctuary on the north side of Plains Road W. as well as Arboretum – a 3km drive from Plains Road West to York Blvd. to Old Guelph Road. The Fishway is a 7km drive and also just under 1 km walk: Plains Rd. West to York Blvd., right on Dundurn St., right on King St., right on Macklin St., park at Princess Point, walk to Fishway (no direct vehicle access from York Blvd.). Another popular day trip is from Burlington, Oakville or downtown Toronto to Niagara Falls Canada. The best way to see this is with Niagara Day Tours (www.niagaradaytour.com). You can ride the Maid of the Mist boat and see the Falls up close and personal, experiencing the actual spray of these world famous waterfalls. The Niagara Falls day trip from Toronto or Burlington includes visits to Niagara on the Lake for wine tasting, the Floral Clock, Smallest Chapel in the World and other local attractions. You can even choose to see Niagara Falls from above with a helicopter ride. This day trip is a fabulous way to explore the region and see the Falls for a low day tour price.
Bronte Creek Provincial Park also offers things to do for the day including a play barn, skating rink in winter, and even a complete Campground.
Visit the Niagara Escarpment and take in panoramic views of this great outdoor paradise.
MoneySense Magazine has called Burlington, Ontario top ratings for factors such as “mild weather, low unemployment, low crime, high incomes and even a thriving arts community”.
There are wonderful things to do in Burlington, on the shores of Lake Ontario. There are often free music concerts at the park by the lake. Beachway Park offers beautiful white sands.
Beachway Park is off of Lakeshore Road in Burlington and near the QEW. There is also the Waterfront trail nearby. Lowville Park is also a nice place and is on the other side of Burlington alongside Bronte Creek at 6207 Guelph Line, Burlington, ON.
Catch the salmon swimming upstream in Bronte Creek (seasonal).
You can ride along the Waterfront trail by bike and enjoy all the area has to offer. Stop off for a picnic or at one of the lakeside dining establishments. Stop in Easterbrook’s for traditional foot long hot dogs or get some of the best ribs at Canada’s Largest Ribfest (Aug. 30 – Sept. 2, 2013).
Stroll through Spencer Smith Park and enjoy the winter Festival of Lights.
